Colorado: Scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder have developed new technology capable of charging phones or laptops within one minute.
According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers at Ankur Gupta’s lab discovered how small charged particles, known as ions, move through complex networks of nanopores.
Ankur Gupta stated that this breakthrough could assist in creating energy storage devices such as supercapacitors.
He further mentioned that, considering the crucial role of energy in the future, they are excited to apply their chemical engineering knowledge to novel energy storage devices.
Ankur Gupta explained that chemical engineering techniques are used in studying the flow of ions in porous materials like oil reservoirs and water filtration. However, they have not been fully utilized in energy storage systems.
This discovery is not only significant for storing energy in cars or electrical appliances but can also be effective in power grids, where efficient storage is needed to prevent energy loss during periods of fluctuating demand.
Supercapacitors, which rely on the accumulation of ions in their pores, offer rapid charging times and long lifespans compared to batteries.
