The Ministry of Commerce confirmed the release of the containers and said they remain at the Port of Mombasa. The release of the rice bags followed the intervention of Federal Trade Minister Jam Kamal.
The Trade Ministry said Jam Kamal had written to Kenyan Trade Ministry officials explaining that the delay was due to the current situation in the Red Sea. The cargo must be diverted due to the situation in the Red Sea causing delays.
The Kenyan government released 1,300 containers at zero duty, according to the Ministry of Trade. In addition, the Kenyan government has enjoyed zero tariffs on Pakistani rice until November 30, 2024.
