The largest solar power plant, capable of meeting all the electricity needs of a small country, has been connected to China’s national grid.
According to global media reports, the park today, located in the northwest desert region of Xinjiang Province, covers an area of about 200,000 hectares, the size of New York City. Annual electricity generation capacity exceeds six billion kilowatt-hours.
A five-gigawatt solar power plant was connected to China’s national grid on Monday. It is capable of meeting all the electricity needs of a country the size of Luxembourg or Papua New Guinea. China leads the world in solar energy adoption, with green capacity increasing by more than 50% by 2023.
A recent International Energy Agency (IEA) report described China’s move to generate electricity from renewable sources as “extraordinary.” The report said last year that China had added the same amount of solar capacity as the rest of the world by 2022.
