Islamabad: The government has decided to reverse the decision to increase electricity rates for consumers who use up to 200 units per month.
According to sources, a proposal to increase tariffs for both protected and non-protected consumers using up to 200 units per month was earlier approved through a summary circulated by the Prime Minister from the Federal Cabinet.
The government has maintained the duty relief for consumers who use up to 200 units per month.
Earlier, a proposal was made to provide relief to consumers using up to 200 units from July to September 2024. The federal government has earmarked around 50 billion rupees to provide tariff relief.
It may be noted that the federal cabinet has approved an increase in the basic electricity tariff by up to Rs 7.12 per unit starting July 1, 2024. The rate will remain at Rs 3.95 per unit for consumers who use 50 units per month and Rs 7.74 for unit for consumers using 51 to 100 units per month.
Earlier, the cabinet approved an increase in tariffs for protected and unprotected consumers with the use of up to 200 units. An increase of Rs 3.95 per unit has been approved for protected consumers using between 1 and 100 units, while the tariff has been increased to Rs 4.10 per unit for consumers using between 101 and 200 units.
Similarly, an increase of Rs 7.11 per unit has been approved for unprotected consumers using 1 to 100 units per month and for those using 101 to 200 units, an increase of Rs 7.12 per unit has been approved.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for tomorrow’s federal cabinet meeting to approve relief measures for electricity consumers. The economic situation will also be evaluated at the meeting.
