Seoul: A huge fire broke out at a lithium battery factory in South Korea, killing 20 workers and injuring several others.
According to international news agencies, the incident took place at the IRISL battery manufacturing company in Hwaseong, South Korea. The fire engulfed the warehouse of the factory and quickly spread throughout the facility.
A preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the fire was caused by the explosion of battery cells inside a warehouse where about 35,000 batteries were stored.
After 4 hours of intensive efforts, firefighters were able to control the fire. During the rescue operation, 20 bodies were found in the burning factory.
Dozens of injured personnel are being treated at nearby hospitals, 4 of whom are reported to be in critical condition. Concerns are growing about the risk of additional deaths.
An inquiry committee has been formed to thoroughly investigate the incident.
