Sydney: Lower back pain is a global problem and is estimated to affect more than 1.5 billion people worldwide. While back pain is an individual condition, one exercise that can be universally helpful is walking.
Australian researchers have reported that daily walking can significantly reduce the chances of recurring lower back pain. Findings from a recent study suggest that just 11 to 18 minutes of walking a day, along with advice from pain management professionals, can be a cost-effective and simple solution. The research also found a 43% reduction in visits to medical specialists as a result of increased walking.
Dr. Natasha Pocovi, co-author of the study, said they effectively changed people’s perceptions of exercise and their beliefs about pain under the guidance of physiotherapists.
In most cases, lower back pain is the result of an initial injury. It fundamentally changes the structure of the muscles that support the spine, especially the lower back. Exercise, such as walking, helps strengthen these muscles and prevents them from weakening over time.
