Islamabad: The Directorate General of Special Education (DGSE), Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025 at the Rehabilitation Centre for Children with Developmental Disorders (RCCDD) in Islamabad. The event followed the year’s global theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”
Government officials attend ceremony on special education initiatives
Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training, Wajiha Qamar, attended the ceremony as chief guest, while Parliamentary Secretary Farah Naz Akbar participated as guest of honour. Officials, teachers, students and families from various special education centres were present.
Remarks focus on inclusion and accessibility
Speaking at the event, Farah Naz Akbar discussed the participation of children in the programme and highlighted the importance of providing supportive and inclusive learning environments.
In her address, Minister of State Wajiha Qamar said the government aimed to improve access to education, rehabilitation services and socio-economic opportunities for persons with disabilities. She noted that coordinated work across institutions was needed to support inclusion efforts.
Students present performances from DGSE-operated centres
Students from DGSE-operated centres presented national songs and performances prepared for the event. According to organisers, such activities reflect ongoing classroom and skills-development work within the institutions.
Ministry outlines measures to strengthen special education services
Earlier, Education Secretary Nadeem Mahbub provided an overview of steps taken to improve special education facilities nationwide. These include:
- procurement of assistive devices,
- establishment of ten IT labs for special learners,
- recruitment of specialised staff,
- upgradation of the orthopedic workshop for artificial limbs,
- development of a unified national sign language code,
- establishment of an autism unit at RCCDD.
According to the ministry, these initiatives are part of broader efforts to expand accessible and equitable services for children with disabilities.
Event concludes with call for continued work on inclusive systems
The ceremony organized by DGSE ended with officials emphasising the need for sustained efforts to improve accessibility, dignity and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
