Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has extended greetings to the leadership and people of Bhutan on the country’s National Day, marking the anniversary of the coronation of Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck as the first Druk Gyalpo in 1907.
In his message, the president said, “On behalf of the Government and people of Pakistan, I extend warm felicitations to His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the Royal Government and the people of Bhutan on their National Day.”
Historical significance of Bhutan’s National Day
President Zardari noted the historical importance of the occasion, stating that the coronation of Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck in 1907 “laid the foundations of a unified and modern Bhutan under the Wangchuck monarchy.”
He also acknowledged the role of successive monarchs, saying they had contributed to “safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and nurturing its unique cultural identity.”
Reference to Bhutan’s development approach
The president highlighted Bhutan’s development philosophy, particularly its emphasis on people-centred policies.
“Bhutan’s focus on people-centred development, especially its philosophy of Gross National Happiness and its commitment to environmental stewardship, continues to inspire many around the world,” he said.
Bhutan–Pakistan relations and SAARC
Referring to regional cooperation, President Zardari said Pakistan values its relations with Bhutan both bilaterally and within the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
“It is sad that India continues to kill the South Asian spirit of SAARC by its hegemonic designs by freezing the great multilateral forum,” he said, adding, “With the help of the great people of Bhutan, we look forward to revive SAARC with more power and impact.”
Call for broader cooperation
The president said Pakistan remains interested in expanding cooperation with Bhutan in multiple sectors.
“We also look forward to working together to strengthen cooperation in education, culture, tourism and people-to-people exchanges for the peace and prosperity of our region,” the message read.
Goodwill message to Bhutan’s leadership and people
Concluding his message, President Zardari conveyed his wishes for Bhutan’s leadership and citizens.
“I convey my best wishes for the continued good health and happiness of His Majesty the King and for lasting progress and wellbeing for the people of Bhutan,” he said.
