Survey Finds 83% of Employees Stay Connected to Work During Time Off, Sparking Concerns Over Digital Anxiety

A recent survey by Kaspersky has shed light on the growing issue of digital anxiety in the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa (META) region. The survey highlights that 83% of employees continue to monitor work tasks even when they are off the clock, signaling an unhealthy trend of constant connectivity. The survey also found that 85% of employees reply to work-related messages and check emails during their personal time, with 81% admitting to responding to work emails while on vacation.

This unrelenting pressure to remain connected is contributing to elevated stress levels in the workplace. According to the survey, 43% of respondents experience anxiety after sending a random message in a work chat, showing how digital missteps have become a source of stress. Interestingly, some mistakes are viewed as less damaging than others, with 40% of respondents indicating that they take it calmly when they accidentally send an unfinished email.

The survey also draws attention to the growing cybersecurity risks posed by digital anxiety. Brandon Muller, Technical Expert at Kaspersky, warns that the constant pressure to respond quickly can lead employees to act impulsively, which makes them more vulnerable to phishing attacks and other scams. The stress of immediate replies often leads to a lack of caution when checking links, attachments, and sender identities.

Muhammad Asad Ul Rehman, a cybersecurity strategist, points out that this phenomenon is not just a workplace challenge but also a national concern, especially in countries like Pakistan, where digital adoption is increasing rapidly. He emphasizes the need for continuous investment in cybersecurity at both organizational and individual levels to reduce vulnerabilities.

Kaspersky offers advice for employees to combat digital anxiety, including taking a moment to verify the authenticity of urgent requests before responding. The company also recommends using advanced cybersecurity tools, like Kaspersky Premium, which features AI-powered anti-phishing capabilities to detect potential threats.

To address these risks, businesses are encouraged to provide ongoing cybersecurity training for their employees and implement robust cybersecurity solutions to minimize the impact of human error. Kaspersky’s security products, such as Kaspersky Security for Mail Server, offer anti-phishing features to help reduce the likelihood of cyberattacks via email.
