Located in the desert region of Xinjiang, a northwestern province of China, this facility spans 200,000 acres, roughly the size of New York City. This 5-gigawatt complex, connected to China’s grid on Monday, is sufficient to meet the energy demands of a country the size of Luxembourg.
China has made the most significant strides globally in transitioning to solar energy, increasing its production capacity by more than 50% in 2023. With this new solar farm becoming operational, it surpasses the Ningxia Tengger and Golmud Wotumeiren solar projects, also in China, to become the world’s largest solar farm.
A recently published report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) has praised China’s shift towards renewable energy. According to the report, China produced as much solar energy in 2022 as the entire world’s new energy installations combined.
