Timergara, January 27 — A one-day seminar on Diabetes and Ramadan was held at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Timergara, highlighting the need for careful medical management of diabetic patients during the holy month.
The seminar was organised with the collaboration of the Pakistan Endocrine Society, Pakistan Society of Physicians, and Pharma Evo, and was attended by a large number of doctors from the district.
Speakers at the seminar included Medical Superintendent DHQ Hospital Timergara Dr. Bakht Zada Akhunzada, Senior Medical Specialist and Assistant Professor Dr. Qazi Ikram, Diabetes Specialist Assistant Professor Dr. Rab Nawaz Khan, Assistant Professor Dr. Musleh-ud-Din, Dr. Muhammad Naeem, Dr. Kamran, Dr. Naveedullah, and Dr. Hafiz-ur-Rehman.
Addressing the participants, the speakers emphasised that diabetic patients must adopt special precautionary measures during Ramadan and should decide whether to observe fasting strictly in consultation with their physicians. They stressed the importance of proper diet, regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, physical activity, and correct use of medications during fasting.
The doctors noted that high-risk diabetic patients should consult their physicians at least three to four times during Ramadan to review treatment plans and adjust medications where necessary. They cautioned that patients should not fast if their blood sugar level falls below 70 mg/dL or rises above 300 mg/dL, as this could pose serious health risks.
The speakers also appealed to mosque imams to use Friday sermons to guide diabetic patients, advising them to refrain from fasting if their health condition makes it dangerous, in line with medical advice and religious teachings.
On the occasion, Medical Superintendent Dr. Bakht Zada Akhunzada urged doctors to prioritise patient care at DHQ Hospital Timergara rather than private hospitals. He said that all essential medical facilities and equipment were available at the hospital and that treating patients there would allow poor and deserving individuals to benefit from free medical services. He added that doctors’ professional recognition was closely linked with their services at the district hospital and called on them to make it their primary focus.
