ABBOTTABAD: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to take action against illegal constructions in Galiyat and approved funding for major waste management and drainage projects, as part of efforts to improve tourism infrastructure in the region.

Secretary Tourism, Culture and Archaeology Saadat Hassan said the government is prioritising tourism development through regulatory reforms and modern planning, including implementation of the Building Control Act 2016 and preparation of a master plan.

Speaking at the Galiyat Development Authority (GDA) office, he said seven towns have been established under the authority, while separate legislation is needed for union councils such as Lora, Bagan and Bakot to curb illegal construction.

Officials said around 50 buildings have been identified for violations within GDA limits, and notices have been issued to the owners.

The government has allocated Rs471 million for solid waste management and drainage projects across seven Galiyat towns, with work orders already issued. Authorities said the projects aim to introduce modern waste disposal systems and protect forests from environmental pollution.

Saadat Hassan said work will begin soon on Nathia Gali and Bakot Road, while NESPAK has been appointed as consultant for infrastructure development.

He added that rehabilitation of the Ayubia chairlift is planned, with expected annual revenue of Rs470 million. The project will involve coordination with wildlife and forest departments.

The secretary said discussions have been completed for a major investment project in Thandiani to further boost tourism.

Officials said the initiatives aim to strengthen infrastructure, regulate construction and improve environmental management in Galiyat.
