Mardan: The trader community in Mardan has rejected the recent increase in petroleum product prices, warning of protests if the government does not review the decision, as concerns grow over rising inflation and economic pressure on businesses and households.
Zahir Shah, Provincial General Secretary of the Central Organization of Traders, said the fuel price hike is likely to increase transportation costs and push up prices of essential goods, directly affecting the public and small businesses.
He described the increase as a major burden on low- and middle-income groups, adding that it could further slow economic activity and intensify inflation across the country.
Impact on prices and business activity
Shah said higher fuel costs are already contributing to an increase in transport fares, which in turn is affecting the prices of daily-use items.
He warned that continued pressure on traders and consumers could disrupt business operations and weaken market activity, particularly in urban centres.
Warning of protests
The trader leader said the business community may stage protests in Islamabad if the government does not reconsider the price increase.
He urged authorities to take measures that provide relief to the public and support economic stability.
Call for policy review
Shah also called for broader economic reforms, including reducing government expenditures and addressing corruption, instead of placing additional financial pressure on citizens.
Other trader representatives, including Shah Gee and Mardan Chamber Vice President Haji Waheed Gul, were also present during the media interaction.
