CHAKWAL: A police official has been booked for murder following the death of a young civilian who was allegedly shot by police near Mandiyal Chowk in the jurisdiction of City Police Station Talagang late on Saturday night, sparking public outrage and prompting senior-level action.

According to initial reports, the victim, identified as Muhammad Abdullah, a resident of Talagang city, had left his home in a car to purchase medicine for his mother. After crossing a police checkpoint near Mandiyal Chowk and reaching the area near Malik Cash & Carry, a police official travelling in an Alto car allegedly chased the vehicle and opened fire.

Police sources said a bullet pierced the trunk of the car and struck Abdullah in the lower right side of his back while he was seated in the front seat. Following the firing, the vehicle went out of control and crashed into a road divider. In an application submitted to City Police Station Talagang, the victim’s father alleged that the firing was carried out by a police official, Muhammad Saqib, who was armed with an SMG rifle at the time. He accused the official of abusing his authority and unlawfully killing his son.

On the basis of the complaint, police registered a murder case and arrested the nominated official.
