MARDAN: The Water and Sanitation Services Company Mardan (WSSCM) has awarded certificates to seven interns who successfully completed their training in the Water Supply and Fleet Management sections under the GIZ-supported REE-Scale 2 project.
The certificates were distributed by WSSCM Chief Executive Officer Shahid Khan, along with international energy expert Dr. Naveed. The internship program focused on building technical capacity and promoting efficient energy management practices within public sector services.
Addressing the interns, Shahid Khan said the program was designed to equip young professionals with practical skills that could contribute to national development. He noted that youth make up a significant portion of Pakistan’s population and stressed the importance of acquiring expertise across diverse fields while working with a sense of public responsibility.
The CEO said the internship initiative is part of WSSCM’s broader strategy to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs. He added that, with technical support from GIZ and the Center for Intelligent Systems and Network Research (CISNR), the company is moving toward achieving ISO 50001 certification for energy management.
Highlighting the impact of improved practices, Shahid Khan said effective energy management has enabled WSSCM to reduce its monthly electricity expenses by around PKR 1.5 million. He added that better fuel management has also resulted in annual savings amounting to millions of rupees.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Naveed said Pakistan continues to face significant challenges in the energy sector. He noted that CISNR is working with multiple institutions to address these issues, while GIZ remains engaged in supporting departments across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to promote efficient energy use. According to him, the results of these efforts are already visible and are expected to contribute to easing the broader energy crisis.
