By Samandar Khan

CHAKWAL: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has presented “a remarkable gift” to the people of Chakwal in the form of an electric bus service, Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said while addressing the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday.

Officials attend launch and take inaugural ride

The provincial minister formally launched the service and travelled from Shuhadaa Park to the District Complex alongside other officials.

Government highlights welfare initiatives and development projects

Mr Khan said the Chief Minister had introduced more than 100 public welfare initiatives aimed at easing the hardships of citizens. He highlighted projects such as the Dhee Rani Mass Marriage Programme, the construction of over 10,000 kilometres of roads this year, the School Meal programme providing milk and other nutritional items to children, and improvements across teaching and non-teaching sectors.

Electric buses to operate on three routes across Chakwal

In the first phase, 15 electric buses will operate on three routes: District Complex–Dhudial, Tehsil Chowk–Balkasar and Tehsil Chowk–Malhal Mughlan. Charging stations have been set up at the General Bus Stand. Elderly citizens, students and women will be offered free travel on the service.

Project aims to improve transport and reduce pollution

The minister said the modern, eco-friendly buses would provide safe, economical and comfortable travel while helping to reduce environmental pollution. He added that the government was working to upgrade public transport in smaller cities in line with systems in major urban centres.

Second phase to expand the electric bus service

Mr Khan said the launch of electric buses in Chakwal would serve as a “significant milestone” and that additional buses would be added in the second phase based on local requirements.
