Stray dog attacks in Shangla injure over 60, residents demand urgent action

SHANGLA — A rise in stray dog attacks in Shangla district has left more than 60 people injured, including women and children, prompting concern among residents and calls for immediate action from local authorities.

The incidents, reported across Alpuri and other areas of the district, have raised public safety concerns, with residents urging authorities to address the growing presence of stray and potentially rabid dogs.

Surge in attacks and injuries

According to local reports, at least 61 people have been injured in recent days. Victims were shifted to District Headquarters Hospital Alpuri and nearby healthcare facilities, where they received anti-rabies treatment.

Hospital officials said timely medical care was provided, and most patients are now stable, including children and women who were among the affected.

Incident involving schoolchildren

One of the reported incidents involved a group of schoolchildren in Alpuri, where stray dogs attacked students on their way home. A child sustained injuries to the face, while others managed to escape.

Residents say similar incidents involving pedestrians, including women, have been reported in multiple areas of the district.

Public concerns over municipal response

Residents have raised concerns about the response of local municipal bodies, stating that responsibilities such as sanitation and control of stray animals fall under Tehsil Municipal Administrations (TMAs).

They say the absence of an effective response has contributed to the persistence of the issue, affecting daily life and public safety.

Calls for action

Local residents and community representatives have called on the provincial government and district administration to launch a coordinated campaign to control stray dog populations.

They also urged authorities to strengthen oversight and ensure municipal institutions address public safety concerns in a timely manner.
