Rickshaw strike disrupts Swat after crackdown on illegal vehicles

SWAT: A citywide strike by the Auto-Rickshaw Union disrupted transport across Mingora and nearby areas on Monday after the district administration launched a crackdown on illegal and tampered rickshaws.

Authorities confirmed several vehicles were seized during the operation, prompting drivers to withdraw services and stage a protest at Grassy Ground in Mingora. Demonstrators accused officials of targeting legally registered rickshaws and said the campaign was threatening the livelihoods of those dependent on the vehicles.

The strike left commuters struggling, with students, employees, patients, and women among those most affected. Many were forced to pay higher fares or walk long distances. Union leaders demanded an immediate halt to the crackdown and called for dialogue to resolve the issue.

District officials defended the operation, saying it was aimed at public safety and enforcement of traffic laws. They maintained that only non-compliant or tampered rickshaws were targeted and confirmed the campaign would continue in accordance with regulations.
